Hogwarts Legacy Reportedly Costs $70 With No Upgrade Option

Entering the wizarding world of the upcoming Hogwarts Legacy might be more expensive than some players may have liked, as the game’s price points and lack of upgrade options have reportedly been revealed.

Although Hogwarts Legacy is not listed on either the PlayStation or Xbox digital stores, VGC is reporting US retailers Best Buy and GameStop both have the game listed for $69.99 on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. Meanwhile, the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Switch versions carry has $59.99 price tag. The price difference between the current and previous-gen versions of the game appears to be the same at UK retailer GAME, though Smyths Toys, also in the UK, lists only a £5 difference.

Players hoping for a discounted upgrade from previous to current-gen consoles may be out of luck, however. Unlike Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga, another Warner Bros. game, the box art for Hogwarts Legacy on its GameStop listing doesn’t clearly show the “Xbox Series X / Xbox One” text or the Smart Delivery logo. This suggests the ability to install both versions of the game depending on the console it’s inserted into won’t be offered for Hogwarts Legacy. Backward compatibility means the PS4 version will be playable on PS5 and the Xbox One version on Xbox Series X. However, it seems players won’t be able to take advantage of the current-gen systems’ enhancements without purchasing the PS5 or Xbox Series X versions at full price.

Yew Hogwarts Legacy does end up releasing without an upgrade option for owners of its previous-gen versions, players will at least not have to worry about any microtransactions adding to the potential burden on their wallets. Developer Avalanche Software recently confirmed that Hogwarts Legacy will not feature any microtransactions, which are controversial in-game stores many modern developers have incorporated into their titles in an effort to make them more profitable.

The Sony State of Play digital event showed off a 15-minute trailer for Hogwarts Legacy earlier this month. The extensive preview unveiled a closer look at the game’s open-world environments, a detailed breakdown of its character creation system as well as the many magical creatures and challenges players can expect to face.

Despite rumors of another delay surfacing back in January, Hogwarts Legacy will be released this holiday season for PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch.
