Val Kilmer took to social media to react to Top Gun: Maverick’s latest trailer which reveals the return of his character Tom “Iceman” Kazansky.
Val Kilmer reacts to Top Gun: Maverick‘s latest trailer which finally reveals Iceman. After more than three decades, Tony Scott’s Top Gun is finally getting a follow-up from Joseph Kosinski. The sequel will see Tom Cruise reprising Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, who is now a Naval captain and instructor in the titular flying school. But while Top Gun: Maverick isn’t bringing back many characters from the original film, it will also see Kilmer return as Iceman.
Top Gun‘s story begins when Maverick and his RIO, Nick “Goose” Bradshaw (Anthony Edwards), are sent to train at the US Navy’s Fighter Weapons School in San Diego called TOPGUN where they join other elite pilots. That includes Iceman, who becomes Maverick’s rival; throughout the whole training period, the pair were locked in an intense competition to be the best in their batch. Ultimately, Kazansky emerged the winner after Mitchell suffered an emotional breakdown when Goose accidentally died. Despite that, the pair eventually became friends and flying partners following a dangerous mission that forced them to rely on each other.
Now, while Maverick headlines Top Gun: Maverick, the sequel will also see Kilmer reprising his role. Marketing for the movie has revealed very little about what to expect from his appearance, but the latest trailer establishes how he fits into the story, and, apparently, he’s integral to Mitchell’s next job training a new generation of elite pilots, including the son of Goose, Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw (Miles Teller). Kilmer took it to his official Twitter account to react to this; check it out below:
Despite the revelation, still very little is known about Kilmer’s role in Top Gun: Maverick. In fact, the trailer didn’t feature any physical appearance from him. He’s only referenced by Jon Hamm’s Vice Admiral Cyclone. Fans can expect him to ultimately show up, however. It is no secret that originally, the sequel wasn’t going to feature him, but eventually, Cruise and the rest of the creatives behind the project decided that Iceman is integral to Maverick’s narrative, and therefore, should be involved in the follow-up blockbuster. So while chances are that Kazansky will have a limited physical presence in the flick due to Kilmer’s health issues, it seems like Paramount is making sure that he’s organically baked into the movie’s story.
The studio can use Top Gun: Maverick as a launching pad for a brand new franchise. While it took Paramount almost four decades to make the sequel, this time, they could more actively develop the universe as Cruise and Kilmer essentially pass the baton to their contemporaries such as Rooster and Glen Powell’s Hangman. From there, the film series can thrive moving forward, with the old guards acting as mentors to those who come after them.
