WHO IS TONY BENNETT?
Singer Tony Bennett had his first No. 1 hit in 1951 with “Because of You”. His signature song, “I Left My Heart in San Francisco”, came in 1962. Bennett’s duets with contemporary artists brought him renewed popularity and success with audiences from the 1990s through August 2021, when he retired due to his ongoing battle with Alzheimer’s disease.
Bennett’s many awards include 19 Grammy Awards (more than Frank Sinatra) and he holds 5 Guinness World Records. His 2021 duet album with Lady Gaga, “Love for Sale” earned him his 4th (oldest person to reach No. 1 on US album charts for a newly recorded album); and 5th (oldest musician to release a collection of new material). Bennett’s other world records include longest time between UK top 20 albums (39 years); oldest person to enter UK top 20 album chart (“Duets: An American Classic” at age 80); and longest time between the release of an original recording and a re-recording of the same single by the same artist.
