Bridgerton’s Nicola Coughlan teases more sex scenes for season 3

Bridgerton season two spoilers follow.

Bridgerton star Nicola Coughlan has reacted to claims that the hit period drama’s second season isn’t as steamy as its first, suggesting that there are more sex scenes to come in season three.

The Netflix drama’s boss, Chris Van Dusen, has already spoken about the subject, saying that he thinks “the steamy moments are just as sexy and scandalous as season one”, and now Penelope Featherington actress Nicola has also addressed the reduced number of sex scenes .

Speaking to Digital Spy and other media, the star revealed that she doesn’t think the number of raunchy scenes included in the new season is any reflection of viewer reaction to the first run of episodes, but has instead been influenced by the new story that season two tells.

“I think it’s just a different type of love story,” she said. “Because in season one, it was a lot about Daphne, sort of embracing your sexuality and discovering that side, whereas this time, it’s more about a sort of forbidden relationship or a relationship that’s not really supposed to happen. So it needed more time .”

While season one of the Shonda Rhimes-produced drama focused on the sexual awakening of Daphne Bridgerton (Phoebe Dynevor) and her discovery of intimacy with Simon Basset (Regé-Jean Page), season two turns the focus to Daphne’s oldest brother, Anthony Bridgerton ( Jonathan Bailey), and the love triangle that he becomes caught in with sisters Kate (Simone Ashley) and Edwina (Charithra Chandran).

And Nicola thinks that Anthony’s story of sexual tension and suppressed longing lent itself more to a different type of sensual scene.

“It’s sort of a different type of view,” she said. “There’s not as many sex scenes, but it has a lot of intimacy within it. So I don’t think it would make sense to sort of copy the same formula we had for season one, because it’s different characters, and a different story .

“And it’s such as the nature of the beast, next year, it’ll be a totally different love story again. But I do have a feeling, I have a feeling next year, from what I know, is going to be extremely racy .This is what I feel.”

Coughlan’s character, Penelope, has yet to have any intimate encounters of her own but, with the series being based on the Bridgerton novels by Julia Quinn, she already knows that Penelope’s own love story is on the way in a future season.

And the Derry Girls actress has admitted that she finds the prospect of having to film her own sex scenes “exciting and terrifying”.

“I think because when I signed on to this show, because it’s based on the books, I knew that her love story was coming at some point, but it felt like a moment in the very distant future,” she said. “And I know her love interest already, it’s Colin Bridgerton.”

She added that she and co-star Luke Newton, who plays Colin, used to “joke” about their characters’ inevitable romance, but that they are finding the prospect of filming some steamy scenes together “progressively less funny and more intimidating as time goes we”.
